King Kekaulike High School to Begin Phased Reopening

King Kekaulike High School in Kula, Hawaii is preparing for a phased reopening following wind damage to the campus. The school will begin by having staff return on Monday, with freshman students returning on Wednesday. Grades 10 to 12 will then return on Thursday.

The damage to the Kula campus includes dislodged roof shingles and downed light poles. Over the weekend, professional remediation and clean up will be conducted to ensure the facilities and classrooms are safe for students.

In Lahaina, public school staff will remain on paid administrative leave from Monday to Wednesday as crews clear debris and test air and water quality at Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary, Lahaina Intermediate, and Lahainaluna High. These schools will remain closed until they are confirmed safe by county, state, and federal authorities.

For Kamehameha III Elementary, which was destroyed by fire, options are currently being explored for students. One possibility is to welcome them to Princess Nahi’ena’ena, while another is the potential use of a temporary satellite site in West Maui.

In the meantime, students who are living outside of Lahaina are encouraged to enroll at other public schools near their current location. This will allow them to have access to in-person services such as meals, socialization, and counseling. For those with a stable internet connection, the Department of Education’s State Distance Learning Program is available, offering asynchronous or synchronous learning options.

Approximately 400 displaced West Maui students have already enrolled in other public schools, while over 200 students have opted for distance learning. Updates on the reopening dates for King Kekaulike High School will be provided once the campus is confirmed safe.
