King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre Achieves World’s First Fully Robotic Living Donor Liver Transplant

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) in Saudi Arabia has reached a historic milestone in medical achievement by successfully performing the world’s first fully robotic living donor liver transplant. This groundbreaking procedure solidifies KFSH&RC’s position as a global leader in minimally invasive transplant surgery. By utilizing advanced robotic technology, the hospital’s Organ Transplant Center of Excellence (OTCoE) team was able to conduct both donor and recipient surgeries with precision and minimal invasiveness, eliminating the need for a hybrid approach.

While other medical centers offer minimally invasive liver transplants using mixed techniques, KFSH&RC is the first to complete a fully robotic living donor liver transplant successfully. This achievement marks a significant advancement in the field of transplantation and demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to advanced practices that improve healthcare outcomes, enhance the patient experience, and optimize hospital efficiency.

The fully robotic approach has several advantages, including reduced risks of complications, shorter recovery time, and shorter hospital stays. By showcasing this remarkable achievement at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh, KFSH&RC aims to share its expertise with healthcare professionals and the public in applying cutting-edge technologies to enhance healthcare possibilities.

In addition to this groundbreaking liver transplant, KFSH&RC has established itself as a record-holder in reciprocal kidney transplants. This innovative approach facilitates kidney transplants between two donors from different families simultaneously. In 2022, the program completed 91 reciprocal transplants, surpassing international counterparts.

As a pioneer in the Middle East, KFSH&RC’s OTCoE is one of the most advanced facilities for multi-organ transplantation in the region. The center offers kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, and intestine transplants, collectively known as solid organ transplantation. KFSH&RC is widely recognized for its exceptional contributions to specialized healthcare, dedication to innovation, and commitment to advanced medical research and education. Through collaborations with local, regional, and international institutions, KFSH&RC strives to develop medical technologies and elevate the standard of healthcare globally.
