Israel conducts “targeted raid” in northern Gaza amid escalating tensions

Israel conducted a “targeted raid” in northern Gaza before withdrawing, according to a statement from the Israeli military. The raid involved tanks and armored vehicles firing artillery, with some destruction observed in the area. The military described the operation as a clear and limited sweep aimed at improving conditions for potential ground operations.

The raid took place as satellite images revealed the extensive damage caused by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The besieged enclave is experiencing a critical humanitarian crisis, with daily bombings, dwindling fuel supplies, and crippled health services. Pressure is mounting on the international community to urge Israel to allow vital aid into Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of an impending ground incursion into Gaza during a televised address. He stated that Israel had already eliminated thousands of terrorists and is prepared for further action. Netanyahu also acknowledged the need to address intelligence failures that led to the recent terror attacks in Israel.

Israel launched its retaliatory campaign in response to attacks and kidnappings conducted by Hamas, the militant group in control of Gaza. The airstrikes have devastated the densely-populated enclave, which had already been described as an “open-air prison” by human rights groups.

Over 6,400 people have been killed, and 17,000 injured as a result of Israeli strikes, according to Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza. Al Jazeera reported that its bureau chief in Gaza lost his wife, son, daughter, and grandson in an airstrike. The blast occurred in an area targeted by the Israeli military, but they maintain that strikes are carried out in accordance with international law.

Journalists have also been heavily impacted, with at least 24 casualties since the start of the conflict. Hospitals are overwhelmed with a constant influx of injured individuals and lack the necessary supplies and electricity to provide adequate care. UN shelters are housing displaced families, but overcrowding is causing severe strains on access to basic assistance and essential services.

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza announced that aid operations would be halted within a day if fuel is not delivered, leaving civilians without a vital lifeline. The UN Security Council remains divided on how to address the crisis, with multiple resolutions failing to pass. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with no immediate solution in sight.
