Humanitarian Aid Delivery to Gaza Amidst Seige

Since the recent attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7th, only a limited number of humanitarian aid convoys have been able to enter the besieged Gaza Strip. This has resulted in a dire situation for the over 2 million people living in Gaza, with almost 1.5 million having been forced to flee their homes.

Although some aid is being flown from Kuwait to Egypt, long lines of trucks carrying humanitarian supplies have been waiting at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt. However, the aid that does reach the border faces delays when entering Gaza. After crossing the border, the aid is transferred to flatbed trucks from within Gaza as delivery vehicles return to Egypt. Some of the aid is taken to a storage facility in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.

So far, 54 trucks carrying food and medical supplies have crossed into Gaza from Egypt in three convoys since Saturday. However, fuel has not been allowed in yet. The lack of fuel is a critical issue as it is needed for the operation of generators in hospitals and for water purification. The United States has acknowledged the importance of fuel and has pledged to work with partners in the region to address this issue.

Before the conflict, Gaza received around 500 trucks per day, including commercial and aid trucks. However, all aid shipments were halted after the Hamas attack. Currently, only 15 to 20 trucks are being allowed into Gaza per day, which is far below the number required to meet basic needs.

As a result of the limited aid, Gaza is experiencing a full power blackout, and hospitals are on the brink of collapse due to shortages of electricity, medicine, equipment, and personnel. Many healthcare facilities have been damaged or are unable to operate properly. The situation is dire, and the United Nations Secretary-General has emphasized the urgent need for aid to flow through the Rafah crossing to save lives.

In conclusion, the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza is facing significant challenges. Limited supplies and the lack of fuel are exacerbating an already dire situation for the people of Gaza. Efforts are being made to address these issues, but more needs to be done to ensure adequate assistance reaches those in need.
