Grain to Deploy Gigabit-capable Broadband Network in Warrington

Alternative network operator and UK ISP Grain has announced plans to deploy their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Warrington, Cheshire. The network will cover more than 10,000 homes in the town, accounting for approximately one tenth of the residential properties.

The rollout timeframe has not been specified in the announcement. Currently, Virgin Media and Openreach are providing gigabit-capable networks in most of the town, although coverage from Openreach is patchy. CityFibre also has plans to build in the area. However, there are currently no other alternative network providers operating in Warrington, except for Freedom Fibre, which has a small build in the southern area.

Grain has secured around £220 million in funding for their network build. They have already unveiled full fibre builds in over 50 locations and 150 new build housing developments, including urban areas such as Leicester, Liverpool, Accrington, Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Scarborough, Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Hartlepool, Newport, Sunderland, and Blackburn.

The initial phase of Grain’s rollout aims to cover 400,000 premises across the UK. However, the company has not provided details on their delivery progress. It is uncertain if they have reached the 100,000 premises mark yet.

The network build in Warrington is expected to commence this week, starting in the Orford Avenue area and neighbouring roads in the town center.

Grain’s broadband packages in Warrington will start from £25.99 per month for a 100Mbps symmetric connection on a 12-month term. The ISP also offers a social tariff for customers on benefits. All packages include unlimited usage, free installation, and a router. Grain guarantees “no in-contract price rises” for their customers.
