Google Messages to Introduce Emergency SOS via Satellite for Android Users

Google seems to be following Apple’s lead with the introduction of Emergency SOS via Satellite for Android users. According to researchers, the recent UI additions to the Google Messages app suggest that users will soon be able to send emergency SOS messages using satellite connectivity.

While this feature is still in development and labeled as a placeholder, it was expected that Google would integrate this functionality into Android. Google has already stated that they are working on enabling satellite support in Android 14, and since Google Messages is the default messaging app for many Android phones, it needs to support this feature to avoid the need for a separate messaging app for phones with satellite connectivity.

Satellite connectivity has proven to be a lifesaver, as demonstrated by Apple’s Emergency SOS feature. Just recently, a family was rescued from wildfires in Maui thanks to the iPhone’s Emergency SOS via Satellite. However, there is no information yet on when the emergency feature will be available in Google Messages. It is also worth noting that the availability of this feature may depend on the modem hardware of the user’s device.

Currently, Apple and Huawei are leading the way in terms of satellite connectivity on phones. Huawei, in fact, launched this feature a week earlier with their Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro phones. As Google catches up, Android users can look forward to having access to emergency assistance even in areas with no cellular connection.
