Fixed Wireless Access Technology Surges in the US: T-Mobile and Verizon Lead the Way

There has been a significant surge in the uptake of fixed wireless access technology in the US, with T-Mobile US and Verizon taking the lead. Recent data suggests that these telecom giants are on track to exceed their predicted subscriber goals.

In the second quarter, T-Mobile US and Verizon added a total of 893,000 customers to their 5G-based fixed wireless access services. T-Mobile US saw over 509,000 net additions, while Verizon closely followed with 384,000 additions.

This increase of nearly 10% compared to the same period last year puts these providers in a strong position to achieve their medium-term targets in the fixed wireless access sector. T-Mobile has projected a combined subscriber base of 11 million to 13 million by the end of 2025, and based on the current rate of customer additions, it is likely that this target will be comfortably met, if not surpassed.

Currently, T-Mobile and Verizon collectively have 5.9 million users, with 3.7 million for T-Mobile and 2.3 million for Verizon. If their quarterly additions remain stable, they stand to gain around 9 million new customers by the end of 2025, reaching a total base of approximately 15 million.

The surge in the fixed wireless access market aligns with the overall growth of the US broadband market. In the second quarter, net additions to US broadband stood at 840,000, with the fixed wireless access market alone contributing significantly to this figure.

However, not all major providers experienced growth in customer numbers during this period. Some providers saw a drop in customer numbers, while cable network providers managed to recover from previous losses, with Charter leading the way.

The wireline market also had a weak quarter, similar to the same period last year, with a net loss of close to 62,000 customers. The gains made by Verizon could not compensate for the significant losses incurred by AT&T and Lumen, who lost 72,000 subscribers.

Fixed wireless services have proven to be a strong performer in the changing telecom landscape. Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst at Leichtman Research Group, highlights the impressive growth of fixed wireless services, with over 800,000 net additions in each of the past five quarters. These statistics make the fixed wireless sector an attractive area for investment and expansion in the telecommunications industry.
