DoorDash fined .01 million for breaching Australian spam rules

DoorDash, a US-based food delivery service, has been fined .01 million for violating Australian spam regulations. The company sent over 1 million unsolicited texts and emails to both customers and potential drivers, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The ACMA initiated an investigation after receiving multiple complaints. They found that DoorDash sent more than 566,000 promotional emails to customers who had previously unsubscribed from their mailing list. Additionally, they sent over 515,000 texts to prospective drivers without providing an option to unsubscribe.

The spam activity took place between February and October of the previous year. During their investigation, the ACMA discovered that DoorDash had falsely categorized the texts sent to prospective drivers as purely informational, claiming they were exempt from spam regulations. However, it was noted that these messages included commercial aspects, such as offers and incentives to become a delivery driver.

In addition to the monetary penalty, DoorDash has agreed to a comprehensive three-year court-enforceable undertaking. This undertaking requires the company to implement improvements to their communications and regularly update the regulator on their progress.

DoorDash is known for its food delivery service, connecting customers with various restaurants and providing delivery to their doorstep. The breach of Australian spam rules highlights the importance of respecting customer preferences and fully complying with local regulations regarding marketing communications.

The ACMA’s action against DoorDash serves as a reminder to all businesses operating in Australia to carefully review their communication practices and ensure they are in compliance with spam regulations.
