AT&T Launches Wireless Home Internet Service in 16 Cities

AT&T Inc. has announced the launch of a new wireless home internet service called Internet Air. Priced at per month, the service will be available in 16 cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati. This move by AT&T follows similar initiatives by Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. in the home broadband market. Home broadband is known for its lower cost compared to traditional landline internet, and wireless carriers entering this space have affected cable providers’ subscriber numbers while offsetting stagnant wireless subscriber growth.

AT&T is in the process of expanding its 5G network, which promises faster speeds and greater device connectivity. The company is targeting areas with sufficient network capacity to offer wireless home connections. Currently, more than half of AT&T’s 13.9 million broadband customers have fiber optic connections, while the rest still rely on copper lines. AT&T plans to use wireless broadband to replace older infrastructure, as stated by CEO John Stankey during an earnings call.

The company had previously introduced a limited run of Internet Air for existing copper-based customers and is now expanding the offering more broadly. However, the number of subscribers currently utilizing the service has not been disclosed.

AT&T’s entry into the wireless home internet market indicates the potential of high-capacity 5G networks in this sector. As competition continues to grow, customers can expect more options and competitive pricing in the home broadband space.
