5G Networks Should Prioritize Quality of Service, Says Indian Telecom Regulatory Official

As telecom operators continue to expand their 5G networks in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of service (QoS) at all times. Meenakshi Gupta, a senior official at Trai, stressed that as network coverage increases, it is crucial that the QoS does not suffer.

Gupta highlighted the role of QoS in building consumer trust and utility. She expressed that QoS should not be considered a byproduct of network implementation, but rather should be integrated into every layer of the network infrastructure to ensure the desired performance level.

In terms of 5G network standards, Gupta noted that QoS requirements should be based on the network’s ability to provide enhanced mobile broadband services, low latency communication, and high device density or massive machine type communication services. While 4G networks support QoS for voice and data services, the actual user experience may not always meet expectations. Gupta explained that emerging applications like gaming and augmented reality require unlimited bandwidth, and 5G networks must be able to deliver consistent QoS and user experience, regardless of the number of users connected at any given time.

Gupta emphasized the importance of resource allocation in maintaining QoS. It is crucial that high-priority services are given adequate resources without compromising the QoS of other services. She stated that 5G networks possess the agility and flexibility necessary to allocate network resources effectively.

Failure to meet QoS requirements can have serious consequences, especially in critical use cases like remote surgery. Gupta stressed the need for telecom operators to prioritize and uphold QoS standards to ensure a seamless and reliable 5G network experience.

It is essential for telecom operators and regulatory authorities to work together to achieve the highest levels of QoS for 5G networks and meet the needs of various emerging applications and use cases.
