2Africa Submarine Cable System Reaches Mozambique

The largest submarine cable system in the world, 2Africa, has officially reached Mozambique this week. The cable system will connect Europe, Asia, and Africa. The landing took place in the city of Nacala-Porto on August 15th.

As part of the project, a first-of-its-kind data center was also opened by Master Power Technologies, a project partner specializing in quality backup power solutions.

Vodacom, a pan-African operator with a presence in Mozambique, is the designated partner for the landing. They will provide infrastructure for cable installation at existing sites in the Maputo harbor area and Nacala port. This is the first submarine cable system to land in the northern part of the country. It is expected to provide greater internet capacity and improved connectivity for Vodacom customers, supporting the digital economy in Mozambique.

The infrastructure will allow local service providers to obtain capacity on a fair basis, promoting the development of the internet services ecosystem. It will also enable direct international connectivity for data centers, enterprises, and wholesale customers. The landing of the fiber optic cable system has the potential to create much-needed regional jobs.

Vodacom will utilize the submarine fiber optic cable infrastructure to offer faster and more reliable internet services in Mozambique, acting as a direct international gateway.

The 2Africa consortium consists of eight international partners: China Mobile International, Meta, Bayobab (formerly MTN GlobalConnect), Orange, Center3, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group, and WIOCC. Alcatel Submarine Networks is responsible for manufacturing and installing the 2Africa cable, which is expected to be completed by 2024.

In addition to Mozambique, recent landings for the 2Africa submarine cable system include Egypt, Gqeberha in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, and Angola.
