Xiaomi Unveils HyperOS: A Unified Operating System for Mobile Devices and IoT Products

Xiaomi Corp, a leading smartphone and gadget giant, has announced the launch of HyperOS, a unified operating system for its mobile devices, cars, and internet-connected home products. This move comes as Huawei Technologies works towards liberating its own integrated operating system, HarmonyOS, from Google’s Android amid US sanctions.

HyperOS is described as a combination of a highly customized Android system and Xiaomi’s proprietary Internet of Things (IoT) platform, Vela. Developed three years ago, Vela supports various smart devices such as wristbands, smartwatches, speakers, home appliances, and sensors. Xiaomi touts HyperOS as a “human-centric” operating system that aims to centralize and streamline the management of its extensive product portfolio.

The latest Xiaomi 14 smartphone series and devices launched in the mainland Chinese market, including smartwatches and televisions, will come pre-installed with HyperOS. This move by Xiaomi reflects a growing trend among Chinese companies to develop their own home-grown operating systems.

Huawei, another major Chinese handset maker, has also developed its own operating system, HarmonyOS. With the upcoming launch of HarmonyOS Next, Huawei aims to sever ties with the Android ecosystem and remove support for Android apps on its devices. Despite its efforts, HarmonyOS currently holds a negligible market share compared to Android, which commands a 70% share of the global mobile OS market.

In addition to Xiaomi and Huawei, other Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Oppo and Vivo are developing their customized operating systems based on the open-source Android. Oppo has ColorOS, and Vivo has OriginOS.

As the competition in the operating system market intensifies, Chinese companies are striving to establish their independence from Google’s Android system. By creating their own operating systems, they aim to offer users a more integrated and seamless experience across their range of products.
