Trends, Challenges, and Convergence in the IoT Space

Dennis Kolberg, Chief Product Officer at Digimondo, discusses various aspects of IoT and IT in a conversation with Ryan Chacon on the IoT For All Podcast. They cover trends in the IoT space, leading use cases, challenges in scaling IoT, IT and IoT convergence, tech agnosticism, acquiring domain knowledge, ROI, and succeeding with multiple use cases.

Dennis Kolberg has a background in factory automation and is currently the Chief Product Officer at Digimondo, a German IoT platform for utilities. He also serves as a guest lecturer at NORDAKADEMIE in Hamburg. Throughout his career, Dennis has supported companies in industries such as automotive, medical, and food to implement IoT and Industry 4.0 solutions.

Digimondo, founded in 2016, aims to make the world more efficient, sustainable, and better through IoT. Their self-developed IoT platform called niotix enables proof-of-concepts and projects of all scaling levels, including global rollouts. By adopting a technology-agnostic approach and utilizing a Digital Twin, Digimondo facilitates the fusion of IoT and IT.

In the interview, Dennis discusses the evolution of the IoT space into three phases. The first phase was the buzzword phase, when IoT was a research topic and people were curious about its potential. The second phase involved educating people about IoT and explaining its benefits and technology, which Digimondo played a role in through their work with customers. The current phase focuses on use cases and implementing IoT solutions at larger scales.

Dennis notes the shift in focus from technology to solutions and use cases. Companies are now more interested in how IoT can solve problems and provide better solutions compared to traditional methods. Sustainability is becoming a significant factor driving new IoT use cases.

The interview also touches on challenges in scaling IoT, such as integrating IT systems with IoT platforms and ensuring interoperability. Dennis emphasizes the importance of tech agnosticism, allowing flexibility in choosing the best technologies for specific use cases. Acquiring domain knowledge is another crucial aspect, as understanding the industry and its requirements is essential for successful IoT implementations.

The conversation wraps up with a discussion on ROI and succeeding with multiple use cases. Dennis highlights the need for clear objectives and measurable outcomes to demonstrate the value of IoT projects.

Overall, the discussion provides insights into the current trends, challenges, and convergence in the IoT space, and the importance of understanding use cases and focusing on practical solutions.
