Transport for NSW Trials Free Wifi Using Starlink Satellites at Nambucca Heads Station

Transport for NSW is currently conducting a trial of free wifi at Nambucca Heads Station, utilizing Starlink low earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This decision was made due to the station being located in a cellular blackspot, despite NBN Co indicating that its service would be available at the station. The free wifi service is limited to 60 minutes per day per user.

Feedback from NSW TrainLink customers regarding the trial has been positive thus far. Vernon Buckle, the customer environment manager, stated that the information gathered from this trial will be used to assess passenger usage and make improvements to future service offerings. He also explained that providing reliable digital connectivity can greatly improve the passenger experience, especially for those in regional areas who often experience long wait times between connections.

Robert Bainton, the infrastructure and integration manager at Transport for NSW, sees this trial as a proof-of-concept that could potentially lead to other applications of this technology across the entire network.

This three-month trial is a collaborative effort between the NSW Telco Authority and Transport for NSW. The Telco Authority has been exploring LEO satellite services since August 2022 as a possible extension to their P25 trunked radio technology. This initiative is part of the authority’s next generation digital connectivity project.

Throughout the trial period, Transport for NSW will actively monitor the service and address any technical or performance issues that may arise.
