The Success of Chandrayaan-3 Mission to Boost India’s Make in India Programme

The successful Chandrayaan-3 mission is expected to have a positive impact on India’s Make in India programme, attracting investments in private space launches and satellite-based businesses. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant feat with this mission, opening up opportunities for the country’s space programme in the lucrative market of space exploration and commerce.

Following the successful completion of the lunar project, the stock prices of 13 Indian space-sector companies, including PTC Industries Ltd, Zen Technologies Ltd., and Centum Electronics Ltd., increased, adding more than .5 billion in market value this week.

The Make in India programme, initiated in 2014 by the Narendra Modi government, aims to attract investments in the manufacturing sector. In the case of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, ISRO collaborated with private partners to manufacture spacecraft components in India. This approach not only ensured cost-effectiveness but also contributed to the indigenization of the space programme.

Tata Consulting Engineers Limited (TCE), the largest Indian private-sector engineering and project management consultancy, played a crucial role in engineering unique critical systems and sub-systems for the mission. Godrej Aerospace, a business unit of Godrej and Boyce, also made significant contributions by supplying liquid propulsion engines and satellite thrusters.

Several other private companies, such as Larsen & Toubro, Walchandnagar Industries, Centum Electronics, and Ananth Technologies, have also played important roles in the mission’s success.

The ultimate goal of the mission is to advance and showcase novel technologies essential for future interplanetary endeavors. Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (Retd.), director general of the Indian Space Association, emphasized the contributions of these private companies in achieving this mission.

The success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission marks a significant milestone for India’s space program and has the potential to drive further investments in the country’s space sector through the Make in India programme.
