The Chief Technology Officer of Bharti Airtel, Randeep Sekhon, discussed the potential of the combination of fifth-generation (5G) technology, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) at the Digital Telco Summit – 2023. According to Sekhon, the convergence of these three technologies will create a multitude of use cases that will benefit various industries.

Sekhon emphasized the importance of these technologies in manufacturing, education, logistics, and more. He shared insights from his conversation with Nokia’s factory head, highlighting the ability to reconfigure robots and machinery on the go using wireless connectivity from the factory’s edge network.

Automation is also applicable in port operations, where certain tasks can be automated for increased efficiency.

Additionally, Sekhon discussed the potential of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies in upskilling remote workers. Leveraging the widespread availability of fiber networks in most cities, AR and VR can provide remote training opportunities.

Sekhon stated that this is just the beginning of digitalization, with enterprises surprising Airtel with their innovative use cases. He emphasized the need for bespoke solutions and collaboration between telcos and enterprises to provide connectivity and support for hardware solutions.

Airtel has already made progress in rolling out its 5G non-standalone (NSA) network, known as Airtel 5G Plus, in over 5,000 cities and towns. The telco aims to complete the rollout within eight months.
