Tesla’s Elon Musk Says Starlink Will Provide Internet Connectivity to Aid Organizations in Gaza

Tesla chief Elon Musk has announced that Starlink, a satellite network developed by SpaceX, will provide internet connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza. Musk made the announcement in response to a tweet from US leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, widely known as AOC. AOC had expressed her concern over Israel’s decision to cut off internet and communications in the Gaza Strip, stating that it endangers journalists, medical professionals, humanitarian efforts, and innocent civilians. In her tweet, AOC also mentioned that the United States has historically denounced such actions. In reply, Musk assured her that Starlink will support connectivity to aid organizations in Gaza.

Starlink is a satellite network launched by SpaceX, which aims to provide low-cost internet access to people in remote areas. The network currently consists of thousands of satellites, with plans to reach a total of 42,000 satellites in the future. Each Starlink satellite has an approximate lifespan of five years.

The announcement comes in the wake of a complete shutdown of phone networks and internet access in Gaza due to intense bombardment by Israel. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society expressed concern over the disruption, as it hampers emergency response efforts and the ability of medics to provide care to the injured. Palestinian telecoms provider Jawwal confirmed the communications shutdown, stating that the heavy bombardment destroyed all international routes connecting Gaza to the outside world. Global internet monitor NetBlocks reported a collapse in connectivity in the Gaza Strip, with significant impact on Paltel, the owner of Jawwal.

Starlink’s provision of internet connectivity to aid organizations in Gaza is expected to offer crucial support in facilitating relief efforts and communication in the region.
