Space Machines Company Collaborates with Australian National University for Optimus OSV Spacecraft Qualification

Space Machines Company, an Australian aerospace firm, is working on qualifying its Optimus OSV Spacecraft for space missions. The spacecraft, considered the largest Australian-built commercial spacecraft, will provide transport and service capabilities in orbit. To ensure its readiness for the space environment, the Optimus Platform will undergo rigorous testing procedures and is projected to launch in early 2024.

To support this endeavor, Space Machines Company has partnered with The Australian National University (ANU) and the Institute for Space (InSpace) in a research program called iLAuNCH Trailblazer. The iLAuNCH Trailblazer program, with a budget of 0 million, is dedicated to developing Australia’s space capabilities by focusing on innovative launch technologies, automation, novel materials, communications, and hypersonics.

Darin Lovett, the Executive Director of iLAuNCH Trailblazer, emphasized the significance of the project. He highlighted the current limitations in space missions where technologically advanced satellites are launched into orbit without the ability to refuel or service them in case of issues. The collaboration aims to develop in-space transportation and logistics services, creating a new global market opportunity and establishing enduring partnerships within the Australian space ecosystem.

The project’s main objective is to space qualify the Optimus Platform at the technology readiness level eight (TRL 8) for flight readiness. This will be achieved through the utilization of the National Space Test Facility at ANU, which is the country’s largest space testing infrastructure.

George Freney, Co-founder of Space Machines Company, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of their business model. By providing a service akin to roadside assistance on Earth, but in orbit, the company aims to improve the resilience and economics of satellite operations. The collaboration with the iLAuNCH project will aid in further maturing the design of the Optimus OSV Spacecraft.

With the qualifications and support provided by the ANU and the iLAuNCH Trailblazer program, Space Machines Company is poised to make significant advancements and reshape the global space industry.
