Scientists Discover Pristine Deep-Sea Coral Reefs in the Galápagos Marine Reserve

Scientists on a 30-day ocean exploration have discovered two new deep-sea coral reefs in the Galápagos Marine Reserve. These pristine reefs, located at depths ranging from 370 to 420 meters, have remained untouched by human explorers. The reefs measure 800 meters in length and 250 meters in width, equivalent to eight football fields, and are a rare find in terms of the amount of living coral in one area.

Dubbed Cacho De Coral, these reefs thrive in the region’s cold water and dim light conditions. The cooler temperatures and unique environment may have contributed to their exceptional condition, offering a glimpse into the resilience of marine life in the face of rising global temperatures.

The discovery and mapping of these coral reefs not only have scientific value but also provide a solid foundation for decision-making to protect these ecosystems and their biodiversity. The Galápagos National Park Directorate recognizes the importance of these findings in safeguarding the biological diversity and resilience of these reefs amidst a constantly changing environment.

In addition to the discovery of the coral reefs, the ocean exploration team is also testing innovative technology to improve underwater mapping. They have deployed laser scanning technology that creates high-resolution maps, allowing for the identification of animals living on the sea floor, which was previously not possible with conventional underwater mapping methods. The team has also uncovered and mapped two previously uncharted seamounts using this advanced technology.

The findings not only highlight the beauty and significance of the Galápagos as a natural wonder but also emphasize the importance of continued research and mapping to preserve and protect deep-sea ecosystems. These discoveries in the Galápagos Marine Reserve serve as a testament to the ongoing mysteries and immense potential for scientific exploration in the deep sea.
