Rohde & Schwarz and MediaTek have successfully verified MediaTek’s 5G RedCap test platform using the R&S CMX500 signaling tester. This development allows MediaTek to confidently test, measure, and verify its final products.

5G RedCap is a technology that brings enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) to the mid-tier segment of the 5G ecosystem. It aims to bridge the gap between low-speed narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) standards and the complexity of today’s 5G networks. With a design optimized for mid-tier use cases, such as sensors in industrial automation, smart cameras, and wearables, 5G RedCap modems offer less complexity, consume less power, and work only in standalone (SA) mode.

The R&S CMX500 supports 5G RedCap and other features defined in 3GPP Release 17. The CMX500 OBT has been optimized by Rohde & Schwarz for IoT testing and allows MediaTek to verify various RedCap aspects, including network access restrictions, bandwidth parts, power-saving functionality, and other RedCap-specific protocol signaling procedures.

As a wireless communication tester, the R&S CMX500 provides a one-box tester configuration and supports all relevant 5G frequencies up to 8 GHz. Its flexible web-based user interface, R&S CMsquares, allows for intuitive control. The CMX500 is suitable for testing all 5G mobile devices and chipsets, supporting different network deployments and frequency ranges.

The R&S CMX500 speeds up the time to market by offering a complete range of testing capabilities. From RF parametric tests to end-to-end application testing, signaling protocol tests, and type approval conformance tests, it covers all stages of the product lifecycle. This one-platform strategy creates a unified environment for both signaling and non-signaling testing throughout the 5G device production stages.
