Rogers Rolls Out 5G Wireless Service in Toronto Subway

Rogers Communications Inc. has launched its high-speed 5G wireless service for its customers in key areas of Toronto’s downtown subway network. The company has also upgraded the cellular network to ensure reliable access to 911 service for all subway riders in these areas.

Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri considers this launch to be an important milestone in their efforts to modernize and expand the network. As of now, Rogers customers can connect to the 5G network in Line 1 stations and tunnels from Union Station to St. George and Bloor-Yonge. Additionally, they can access the 5G network in 13 stations on Line 2 from Keele to Castle Frank.

Earlier this year, Rogers acquired the Canadian operations of BAI Communications, which held the rights to provide wireless service on the Toronto subway. Rogers plans to upgrade the existing infrastructure and build 5G capability for the entire network within the next two years. The company has expressed its commitment to work with other carriers and make the upgraded system accessible to them.

However, there has been a feud with other major carriers over access for all transit riders. Bell and Telus have advocated for a consortium model, similar to Montreal’s Metro system, for the joint build of the subway’s 5G network. Rogers, on the other hand, has not publicly committed to either model.

The Canadian government has launched a consultation process to expedite negotiations among the major carriers. Rogers has opposed an option that would prevent it from giving its customers first access to the upgraded network and prefers the matter to be resolved through commercial negotiations.

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has stated that the decision to launch cellular service on the subway network solely lies with Rogers. TTC CEO Rick Leary sees this as a significant milestone and looks forward to all wireless carriers joining the network.

Overall, Rogers’ 5G wireless service in the Toronto subway marks a step towards improved connectivity for subway riders, with plans for further expansion and inclusion of other carriers in the future.
