Reliance Jio Launches JioSpaceFiber: India’s First Satellite-Based Broadband Service

Reliance Jio, one of India’s leading telecom operators, has introduced JioSpaceFiber at the India Mobile Congress 2023. As India’s first gigabit broadband service powered by satellite technology, JioSpaceFiber aims to provide high-speed internet access to previously unreachable areas in the country.

The service utilizes the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology, allowing Jio to deliver fiber-like services from space. To achieve this, Jio has partnered with SES, a global leader in satellite communications, and will utilize their O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites. This partnership will enable JioSpaceFiber to offer low latency and high throughput connectivity.

For testing purposes, JioSpaceFiber has already been connected to four remote locations in India, including Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odissa, and ONGC-Jorhat Assam. This initial connectivity will pave the way for further expansion of the service.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, expressed the company’s commitment to reach millions of people who are still unconnected. He stated, “With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected. JioSpaceFiber will allow everyone, everywhere, to fully participate in the new digital society with gigabit access to online government, education, health, and entertainment services.”

The exact launch date of JioSpaceFiber in India has not been announced yet. Once launched, it will compete with other service providers like OneWeb from Bharti, Project Kuiper from Amazon, and Starlink from SpaceX. Additionally, JioSpaceFiber will enhance the availability and scale of Jio’s own 5G network service, Jio True5G, particularly in remote areas.

Further details regarding the cost and plans for JioSpaceFiber are yet to be revealed by the telecom operator.
