Redmi 12 5G: A Budget Smartphone with Impressive Features

Just a few years ago, budget smartphones were giving premium devices a run for their money. However, the market has changed and there are now fewer notable options available. Xiaomi has recently launched its Redmi 12 5G phone in India, starting at a price of ₹10,990. This device is equipped with the all-new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset, offers 5G support, and features an FHD+ screen.

In terms of design, the Redmi 12 5G has a plastic frame and a glass back. Although it has a sleek appearance, the materials used are not as high-quality as premium phones. The device is relatively thin at 8.17 mm, but it can be slippery, so using a case is recommended.

One standout feature of the Redmi 12 5G is the side-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded within the power button, which is fast and reliable. Additionally, the phone has an IP53 rating for dust and water resistance, and it includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The device sports a 6.79-inch FHD+ LCD screen with a 90Hz screen refresh rate and AdaptiveSync technology. The display is sharp, but the colors and contrast may not be as vibrant as higher-end models. The phone also supports Full HD playback on Netflix but lacks HDR support.

Under the hood, the Redmi 12 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset, built on a 4nm architecture for improved efficiency. While the hardware is impressive, the software experience is not as smooth as expected.

In terms of software, the device runs on Android 13 with MIUI 14. It offers plenty of customization options and features such as app drawer integration and theme changes.

The Redmi 12 5G supports 5G connectivity, making it somewhat future-proof. However, widespread 5G coverage is still limited in India. The device is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery that lasts a full working day and supports 18W fast charging.

On the camera front, the Redmi 12 5G features a dual rear camera setup with a 50MP primary shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. The image quality is decent in well-lit conditions.

Overall, the Redmi 12 5G is a budget smartphone that offers impressive features like 5G support, a high refresh rate display, and a large battery. Although there are some compromises in terms of materials and software optimization, it provides a good user experience for its price range.
