North Korea’s Failed Attempt at Launching Spy Satellite

North Korea recently announced its unsuccessful attempt at launching a spy satellite. This news came shortly after South Korea’s military reported detecting a long-range rocket launched from North Korea. This marks the second failed attempt by North Korea, with plans for a third try in October. The first attempt on May 31 resulted in the rocket falling into the sea after launch.

The purpose of these attempts is to develop a space-based surveillance system to monitor the military activities of the United States and South Korea. The state news agency KCNA reported that the flights of the first and second stages of the rocket were normal, but an error in the emergency blasting system during the third-stage flight led to the failure.

The launch triggered an emergency warning in Japan, causing residents in Okinawa to seek shelter indoors. However, the warning was lifted after about 20 minutes. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the rocket off the Korean Peninsula’s west coast, where North Korea’s main space launch center is located.

Notably, the launch took place just three days after the United States and South Korea commenced their annual joint military drills. North Korea perceives these drills as rehearsals for an invasion and believes they increase the risk of nuclear war between the countries.

In response to the launch, South Korea bolstered its defense systems and maintained close communication with the United States. In May, both countries condemned the first launch for violating United Nations agreements that prohibit the use of ballistic missiles.

Furthermore, South Korea’s spy agency reported last week that North Korea was preparing for tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles and other weapons. Additionally, recent reports from KCNA mentioned the firings of tests involving strategic cruise missiles.

Despite its failed attempts, North Korea continues to pursue its ambitions in the realm of space-based surveillance.
