North Korea Reportedly Preparing ICBM Tests and Spy Satellite Launch

North Korea is said to be preparing for intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests and a spy satellite launch, according to South Korea’s intelligence service. In recent months, North Korea has conducted multiple missile tests.

The South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) informed lawmakers that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to resume weapons testing in response to joint U.S.-South Korean military drills scheduled to begin next week, as well as the upcoming summit of the U.S., South Korea, and Japan planned for Friday.

The intelligence agency has detected unusual activity at North Korean facilities. One of these facilities is involved in the production of solid-fueled ICBMs, while another deals with liquid-fueled ICBMs.

Additionally, the NIS stated that North Korea may attempt to launch a spy satellite later this month or early next month, in commemoration of the country’s 75th anniversary on September 9. The NIS noted that North Korea has already been conducting tests on engines intended for the launch. It should be noted that this would be the country’s second attempt at a spy satellite launch this year, with the first attempt failing in May.

North Korea has recently increased its warnings against the U.S. and South Korea regarding the resumption of joint military drills. The country launched an ICBM in July, its first in months, following an ICBM test in April which was designed to be harder to detect than previous missiles.
