North Korea Fires Suspected Ballistic Missile Over Japan

North Korea has launched a suspected ballistic missile on Thursday, within the announced window for the launch of a “satellite,” according to the Japanese government. This comes after North Korea’s failed launch of a military reconnaissance satellite in May, where they pledged to try again as soon as possible.

The Japan Coast Guard had been notified by North Korea on Tuesday about three maritime danger zones where the object may fall during the launch period between Thursday and August 31. These designated areas are located to the west of the Korean Peninsula and to the east of the Philippines, outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

In response to North Korea’s notification in May, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces were ordered to destroy any projectile expected to land within the country’s territory. The leaders of Japan, the United States, and South Korea had also agreed last Friday to strengthen cooperation in opposing North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.

There are concerns of further provocation from North Korea, including a potential intercontinental ballistic missile test that could coincide with the ongoing military drills between the US and South Korea. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called on North Korea to exercise restraint, warning that any launch using ballistic technology would violate UN Security Council resolutions and result in severe economic sanctions.
