New State of SaaS Security Posture Management Report Highlights Importance of SaaS Cybersecurity

A recent State of SaaS Security Posture Management Report by AppOmni reveals that SaaS cybersecurity is increasingly recognized as a critical aspect of the cyber threat landscape. The report surveyed over 600 IT, cybersecurity, and business leaders from companies ranging in size from 500 to 2,500+ employees.

Overall, respondents expressed confidence in their organizations’ SaaS cybersecurity preparedness and capabilities. For example, 71% rated their organizations’ SaaS cybersecurity maturity level as either mid-high or the highest level. Similarly, 73% rated the security levels of authorized SaaS applications as mid-high or the highest maturity level. Additionally, 85% stated that they were confident in their company’s or customer’s data security in sanctioned SaaS apps.

However, the reality of SaaS security incidents and breaches paints a different picture. Only 21% of respondents claimed zero SaaS incidents in the past 12 months. This highlights the discrepancy between perceived resilience and actual incidents.

SaaS data breaches can have severe consequences for organizations, including operational disruptions, reputational damage, and financial losses. According to a recent IBM report, the average cost of a data breach is now .45 million. Many incidents were preventable, involving issues such as over permissioned users, app misconfigurations, and human error-related data exposures.

The report also emphasizes the underestimated risk associated with SaaS applications. The increasing reliance on cloud and SaaS infrastructure, coupled with the flexibility and customizability of SaaS, has led to a significant SaaS footprint. Surprisingly, legacy cybersecurity tools and procedures are no longer sufficient to protect against SaaS-related risks.

The report identifies three key misunderstandings that put SaaS applications at higher risk. These include misconceptions about SaaS data security, overconfidence in the extent of SaaS cyber risk visibility, and inadequate security knowledge among business or application owners responsible for configuring SaaS applications.

In conclusion, the State of SaaS Security Posture Management Report highlights the importance of prioritizing SaaS cybersecurity. Organizations need to address the gaps in their SaaS security posture, enhance visibility and monitoring capabilities, and implement robust security measures to protect against SaaS-related risks.
