Misinformation about Video of Green Lights and Hawaii Wildfires

Social media users are circulating a video that supposedly shows high-energy lasers igniting the devastating wildfires in Hawaii in August 2023. However, this claim is false. The footage actually depicts green flashes in the night sky that were captured by an observatory in January. The observatory believes the lights were most likely from a Chinese satellite.

The video was shared on platforms like TikTok and Instagram with captions referencing conspiracy theories about directed energy weapons and laser weapons causing the Hawaii wildfires. Directed energy weapons use concentrated electromagnetic energy, but there is no evidence supporting these claims.

Reverse image searches show that the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan captured and published the footage in January 2023. The lights were initially thought to be from a NASA satellite launched in 2018 but were later identified as coming from a Chinese satellite called Daqi-1. The satellite is used for atmospheric monitoring and emits pulsed lasers.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the Hawaii wildfires. The National Weather Service alerted local officials about dangerous fire weather conditions in advance, and the spread of the fires was aided by dry vegetation, strong winds, and low humidity.

Claims that fallen power lines triggered the first blazes have also been reported. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Hawaiian Electric, the main utility company in the state, accusing them of keeping their power lines energized during high fire danger conditions.

It’s important to be cautious of misinformation spread on social media regarding natural disasters. This video of green lights in the sky has been misinterpreted and falsely linked to the Hawaii wildfires.
