Malibu: The Land of Luxury and Fame in California

Malibu, a famous and luxurious city in California, is known for being the home of the state’s first zero carbon home. Despite its eco-friendly nature, this house does not compromise on comfort and modern entertainment. To achieve their goal of having a 100% off the grid home, the homeowners enlisted the help of DSI Luxury Technology to create a truly groundbreaking smart home.

The project had unique considerations due to its zero carbon aspirations. Every component, including the fabric of the shading solutions, had to be assessed for its environmental impact. Additionally, the homeowner was technically inclined, requiring a special and unique technological solution.

Eric Thies, a representative from DSI, stated that the homeowner’s intent was to have the first zero carbon home in California. This meant that power consumption was of utmost importance. They also wanted a luxurious home technology experience, including an exceptional theater, audio zones, and voice control of every system.

To achieve an efficient lighting system, Thies selected Lutron controls and Josh.AI. The Tesla panels and batteries generated and stored electricity for the home, while Lutron controls managed lighting functions and power draw. The lights were equipped with special drivers allowing them to dim up to 1% for maximum efficiency. Thies also implemented an ‘Eco Mode’ to minimize lighting loads in low battery situations. The Lutron controls were paired with the Josh.AI custom solution, providing convenient and intuitive control of lights from any room.

The HVAC system was integrated into the home’s control, allowing for energy savings by limiting the system to rooms that had pocket doors open to the outside. Other features included room-to-room audio distribution by Sonos, a CATS acoustical system, a Sony projector, and a 10-foot-wide film screen by Screen Innovations, all controllable through the Josh.AI interface.

To ensure resilience in the face of power interruptions, Thies designed a self-healing network system. Devices such as modems, switches, security cameras, and routers were connected to the control system for monitoring and automatic reset in the event of an outage.

DSI provided the homeowners with full insight into the home environment, providing wiring diagrams, as-builts, rack elevations, lighting schedules, and power consumption data upon project completion.

Malibu’s zero carbon home is a testament to the possibilities of luxurious, eco-friendly living with the latest smart home technology.
