Israel-Gaza Conflict: Nighttime Airstrikes in Northern Gaza

The Israeli military conducted a series of intense nighttime airstrikes in northern Gaza, targeting around 150 underground facilities, according to an announcement by the army on Saturday. The airstrikes resulted in a significant disruption of internet and communication services in the region. Human Rights Watch has expressed concerns about the extensive telecommunication blackout in Gaza and Israel’s sustained bombardment of the Palestinian territory, warning that it raises the potential for concealing “mass atrocities.”

Hamas, the Gaza-based Palestinian militant group, announced that its fighters are prepared to respond with full force to Israeli attacks. Reuters reported that Hamas fighters had engaged in clashes with Israeli troops in areas close to the border with Israel. The Gaza death toll has surged to 7,703, according to the health ministry in Gaza. Among the dead are over 3,500 children. The overall figure represents the highest number of war fatalities in Gaza since Israel withdrew from the territory in 2005.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has also weighed in on the conflict, warning against any expansion of the conflict in Gaza and stating that the region could become a “ticking time bomb.” Al-Sisi emphasized the importance of respecting Egypt’s sovereignty after drones entered Egyptian airspace.

Hamas has expressed its willingness to find and free eight Russian-Israeli hostages. Hamas Politburo member Abu Marzouk stated that the group is looking for the individuals identified by Russia and intends to release them. Marzouk affirmed that Russia is viewed as a close friend.

The internet and phone services blackout in Gaza has raised concerns among experts. It is believed that the blackout will allow the Israeli army’s narrative to proliferate without much opposition, as information from Gaza is limited. The demands for Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite-based system, to establish communication in Gaza have flooded social media. However, experts have cited several reasons why this is not currently possible, including the lack of expressed interest from Musk and the control Israel exercises over Palestine.

The situation in North Gaza remains dire, with reports of heavy clashes in various areas and strikes on the underground Hamas tunnel system. Palestinians in Gaza have endured the heaviest bombardment from Israel in the past twenty-four hours, exacerbating the already dire situation in the besieged region. Despite water, food, and fuel shortages, Palestinians continue to struggle for survival.
