Iran Demands Licensing for Starlink Operations

Iran has called for an end to “unauthorized Starlink operations” within the country and has demanded that Elon Musk’s satellite internet company obtain the necessary licenses for its activities. The International Telecommunications Radio Regulations Board of Iran’s Ministry of Telecommunications has identified Starlink’s services as a violation of international regulations.

Iran has a history of strict internet control and censorship, with thousands of websites blocked and social media platforms banned. The lack of independent media and heavy censorship have led many Iranians to rely on social media for political news and information.

Last year, the Iranian government gave Meta Platforms, the parent company of WhatsApp Messenger and Instagram, a 10-day ultimatum to establish offices in Iran and unblock their apps. However, Meta Platforms rejected the demand, aimed at exerting control over its operations.

Following widespread protests in Iran, the regime limited internet access for its citizens. In response, the US government relaxed some sanctions on exporting internet services to Iran, allowing SpaceX to offer Starlink satellite internet services in the country.

Elon Musk recently revealed that the Iranian regime expressed dissatisfaction with the introduction of Starlink internet services. He shared a letter from Iranian leadership during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in California. The satellites were introduced discreetly during internet shutdowns.

The demand for licensing from Iran highlights the country’s efforts to control and regulate internet access. It remains to be seen how SpaceX will respond to the request and whether they will secure the necessary licenses to continue their operations in Iran.
