Internet and Computer Access on South Dakota Farms

The U.S. Agriculture Department has released data showing that South Dakota farms have a higher rate of internet and computer access compared to the national average. According to data from the National Agricultural Statistic Service (NASS) in 2021, 81% of farms in South Dakota have computer access, while 90% have internet access.

This is higher than the national average, which indicates that only 67% of farms across the country have access to computers. South Dakota’s average is 14% higher than the national average, highlighting the state’s progress in bridging the digital divide.

What’s more, internet access on South Dakota farms has seen an 8% increase since the previous survey conducted in 2019. This demonstrates the ongoing efforts to improve connectivity and access to information and resources for farmers in the state.

Having internet and computer access is crucial for modern farming practices. Farmers can utilize online resources to monitor weather patterns, access market information, and streamline administrative tasks. It also serves as a vital tool for communication and networking within the farming community.

Improved access to technology can lead to increased productivity and efficiency on farms. It allows farmers to make informed decisions, optimize their operations, and stay competitive in an ever-evolving agricultural landscape.

The findings from the U.S. Agriculture Department’s report indicate that South Dakota is making significant strides in improving digital infrastructure for its agricultural sector. The continued investment in expanding internet access and computer availability on farms is critical for the success and sustainability of the state’s farming communities.
