India’s Mars Mission Highlights Need for Increased Funding and Larger Rockets

India’s Mars mission may have had a lower cost compared to certain Hollywood films, but the nation’s resourcefulness and economic engineering will eventually require increased funding and larger rocket systems, according to K Sivan, the former chief of ISRO.

The mission durations between India and Russia differed significantly due to India’s use of a slingshot maneuver towards the Moon, utilizing Earth’s gravitational pull to propel the spacecraft. On the other hand, Russia opted for a more substantial rocket to directly place its satellite into lunar orbit.

In an interview, K Sivan emphasized the need for larger rockets and systems, stating that frugal engineering alone is not enough. He expressed support for the government’s decision to involve private industries in space activities and saw keen interest from the private sector. He also expressed confidence that private entities would soon have access to advanced technology and sufficient financial backing.

Sivan also expressed optimism about India’s upcoming Gaganyaan mission, the country’s first manned space endeavor. He believed that the success of this mission would pave the way for ambitious projects like a lunar space station and other significant ventures.

Reflecting on the discovery of lunar water by Chandrayaan-1 in 2009, Sivan described it as an exhilarating moment for the entire ISRO community. He highlighted the importance of rockets, emphasizing their quality and reliability in mission success.

Regarding cryogenic engines, Sivan underscored their role in increasing payload capabilities. He mentioned India’s independent development of these engines and ongoing work on semi-cryogenic engine technology.

When asked about reusable rockets similar to SpaceX’s, Sivan revealed that technology demonstrations for vertical landing are ongoing. He saw the possibility of developing such rockets once positive results are achieved.
