High-Speed Internet Now Available in Kootenay Lake Region

Access to reliable, high-speed internet services is now available in the northern area of Kootenay Lake, setting up for 330 households in six communities. The completion of new last-mile network infrastructure by local service provider Kaslo infoNet Society (KiN) allows residents in Lower Kaslo Southeast, Argenta, Johnsons Landing, Shutty Bench, Zwicky Road, and Allen Subdivision to enjoy high-speed broadband internet speeds of more than 50 megabits per second (Mbps) for downloads and 10 Mbps for uploads.

The project, which was partially funded by the Province through the Connecting British Columbia program, builds upon an earlier project by KiN in the area. The Province contributed 9,600, while Kaslo infoNet Society contributed approximately 7,400, making the project’s total cost nearly 0,000.

The availability of high-speed internet in the region has been a game-changer for residents. Chelsey Jones, the executive director of the Lardeau Valley Opportunity LINKS Society, expressed her gratitude, stating that having high-speed internet access at home in her remote community of Argenta has allowed her to reliably attend video meetings and work from home. She believes that improved connectivity throughout the Lardeau Valley will facilitate community development and attract and retain residents and businesses in the area.

The mayor of Kaslo, Suzan Hewat, emphasized the importance of broadband access, stating that it is crucial for commerce, communication, and community safety. She highlighted that residents and businesses in Kaslo and Area D now have access to connectivity at the same level as larger urban centers, thanks to the efforts of the Kaslo infoNet Society.

Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson also highlighted the significance of high-speed internet access for rural and remote regions. She mentioned that it allows people to stay in the communities they love while having access to services, resources, employment, and education, as well as connecting with others.
