Government Temporarily Utilizing Satellite Internet Services to Address Poor Internet Access in Malaysia

The Malaysian government has opted to employ the services of satellite internet providers, such as Starlink, in areas with limited internet access as a temporary solution while awaiting long-term remedies. Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that satellite internet is an ideal interim measure due to its plug-and-play functionality, fast speeds, and reasonable pricing.

Malaysia currently has four satellite internet providers, including Starlink. Fahmi clarified that this decision was not motivated by commercial interests but rather by the advantages that this technology offers the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

During an event held at Taman Tasik Danau Kota to commemorate National Day, Fahmi also mentioned discussions about expanding satellite internet technology to schools and health clinics in the states of Sabah and Sarawak. These conversations involve the Health Minister, Education Minister, and Rural and Regional Development Minister.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced plans to install 40 Starlink satellite internet devices in higher education institutions nationwide. The aim was to aid students who faced challenges in studying due to unreliable internet connectivity. The decision followed a virtual meeting between the Prime Minister and Starlink CEO Elon Musk.

Additionally, Fahmi revealed that several telecommunication service providers will soon offer 5G Rahmah Internet packages at a reduced price or with higher data capacities. The base price for these packages will be RM60, with providers likely to offer even lower rates or increased data capacities. The 5G Rahmah package is a bundle plan that includes a Samsung A14 5G or Honor 90 Lite 5G phone, along with a 60GB data plan worth RM60 per month. The package is expected to be launched on August 31.
