EM Solutions has successfully conducted the first system level tests for a transponder developed for Telesat’s LEO 3 demonstration satellite. The satellite, launched on July 18th, features a flexible bent pipe architecture with Ka- and V-band uplinks and the option for downlinking on either Ka- or Q-band. The compact size and weight of the satellite were customized for operation on Space Flight Laboratory’s DEFIANT platform.

The communications payload for the satellite was designed and manufactured at EM Solutions’ office in Brisbane, Australia. The company’s facility now includes a new ISO7 clean room, workstations, and wire bonding machines. EM Solutions has a strong focus on SATCOM terminals operating at X- and Ka-bands and has demonstrated its ability to produce customized products for various applications using its broad microwave experience.

The completion of the system level tests was a collective effort involving EM Solutions’ design, test, and assembly members, as well as suppliers and customers like SFL and Telesat. Despite the tight schedule and global component shortage, the company successfully completed the tests. The National Space Test Facility at the Australian National University provided support for the environmental testing.

Garth Niethe, Chief Engineer at EM Solutions, expressed gratitude to all involved in the project. The company plans to leverage its expertise in microwave product design and manufacturing, particularly in the Q and V bands, for future satellite transponder payloads and other applications.
