Divisive Ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra Returns to Thailand to Face Criminal Charges

Divisive ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has returned to Thailand after years of self-imposed exile to face criminal charges. His return coincides with the Pheu Thai party’s plan to form a new government. Thaksin has denied that his return is related to the party’s pursuit of power.

Thaksin arrived in Thailand on Tuesday, flying in from Singapore in his private jet. Thai broadcasters aired live footage of his arrival at Don Mueang International Airport, where he was greeted by supporters and key Pheu Thai member Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

Before leaving the airport, Thaksin placed a flower wreath and prostrated before a portrait of Thailand’s king and queen, showing respect to the monarchy. Supporters gathered outside the airport, wearing red and holding signs to welcome him. Core members of the Pheu Thai party were also present.

Thaksin, a billionaire, served as prime minister from 2001 to 2006 before being ousted in a military coup. He fled into exile and has since been convicted in absentia in several criminal cases. If he does not receive a royal pardon, he could face prison time.

The Pheu Thai party is affiliated with Thaksin and has been involved in a power struggle since his ousting. The party came in second in the recent elections and is now forming a coalition government. The move has been criticized by some supporters who accuse the party of backtracking on its pre-election pledge not to join hands with pro-military parties.

Parliament is set to vote on the Pheu Thai’s candidate for prime minister, former property developer Srettha Thavisin. The party-led coalition holds 314 seats in the House of Representatives and needs support from the non-elected Senate to achieve a majority.

Thaksin’s return to Thailand suggests that he may have received assurances that he will not have to serve a full prison sentence. As the country’s political landscape continues to evolve, the role of Thaksin and his influence on Thai politics remain significant.
