Cloud Dominates Mobile and Console Gaming, Vodafone’s Trial Shows

Both mobile and console gaming have been greatly influenced by cloud technology in recent years, although each platform offers different types of content. Mobile gaming, in particular, has limitations due to the challenges of delivering complex content over wireless connectivity. However, Vodafone has addressed this issue through network slicing, enabling the customization of connectivity services for specific customers and use cases.

Vodafone conducted a trial that demonstrated significant improvements in gaming connectivity. Participants experienced a 270% increase in download performance, a 25% decrease in latency, and 57% less jitter. This trial proved the value of network slicing and its ability to provide personalized connectivity services, offering a more tailored and immersive gaming experience.

Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone UK, emphasized that 5G Standalone is not simply an upgrade from 4G but an entirely new technology. By providing a slice of connectivity customized for gaming, Vodafone can deliver a full-fibre-like experience over the airwaves. This showcases the potential of network slicing to enhance 5G use cases and deliver exceptional gaming experiences.

Vodafone and Three UK plan to invest £11 billion in network upgrades over the next ten years, with the goal of achieving 99% coverage of 5G Standalone in populated areas by 2034. This investment will enable them to meet the increasing demand for connectivity and offer innovative services to enter new markets and expand their businesses.

Blessing Makumbe, VP and Head of Digital Services for Ericsson UK & Ireland, highlighted the significance of 5G Standalone technology and network slicing in meeting the connectivity needs of both consumers and businesses. These advancements not only provide the necessary performance for future applications and services but also create opportunities for operators like Vodafone to offer innovative services and expand their market reach.

Vodafone’s successful trial and their commitment to investing in network upgrades exemplify the transformative potential of cloud technology in gaming and the telecommunications industry as a whole.
