Challenges Faced by Yamaha in MotoGP

Yamaha, once a dominant force in MotoGP, is currently facing challenges in the premier class. The Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, Lin Jarvis, is entrusted with improving the team’s performance. Recently, Jarvis clarified Yamaha’s selection of Alex Rins over Franco Morbidelli for the 2024 season and shed light on the challenges faced by Japanese manufacturers in MotoGP.

Jarvis spoke about Yamaha’s desire to have a satellite team and the criteria they would use to choose one. He admitted that Ducati has an advantage with eight motorcycles on the grid, allowing them access to valuable information for upgrades. Yamaha had wanted a satellite team for a long time, but failed to reach an agreement with RNF and consequently did not sign a multi-year deal. This marks the first season for Yamaha without a satellite team.

Yamaha aims to attract Valentino Rossi’s VR46 team if their bike proves competitive enough. The VR46 team currently has a contractual agreement as a satellite team for Ducati, but Yamaha is keen on having them join their ranks for the 2025 season. Yamaha is focusing on improving their package to regain competitiveness. Gaining the trust of a satellite team is crucial for Yamaha’s success and they have confidence in the company’s future.

Yamaha’s main priority for 2023 is to increase the top speed of their M1 bike, as it is their greatest weakness when compared to Ducati’s bike. Initial winter testing gave the Japanese team confidence, but the start of the new season revealed that their early optimism was unfounded. The M1’s underwhelming performance is largely due to its inability to reach its advertised top speed, making it lose its unique agility and edge over competitors.

In terms of standings, Quartararo is currently in 11th place with teammate Franco Morbidelli close behind in 12th place. Yamaha has fallen to last place in the constructors’ standings, lagging behind leader Ducati by 233 points and Honda by just five points. Both Yamaha and Honda are now subjects of debate regarding potential concessions to support these struggling Japanese giants.
