Brown Announces New Investment to Expand Internet

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has announced a federal investment of 2.5 million for high-speed internet infrastructure and community and workforce development projects in Ohio. This funding, provided through the American Rescue Plan’s Capital Projects Fund, aims to expand internet access in the state.

Of the total funding, .5 million will be allocated for rural broadband infrastructure, which is expected to connect 15,000 homes and businesses. The remaining million will be used for multi-purpose community facilities, ensuring long-term connectivity for Ohio communities.

The American Rescue Plan, passed by Congressional Democrats and signed into law by President Joe Biden in January 2021, aims to bridge the digital divide and provide reliable internet access to all Americans.

Senator Brown emphasizes the importance of reliable, high-speed internet for Ohio families and businesses regardless of their location. He is committed to ensuring that areas of the state that have been left out in the past receive the necessary investment for connectivity.

Ohio will use .5 million of the funding for high-speed internet infrastructure projects. These funds will be directed towards the Ohio Residential Broadband Expansion Grant Program, which focuses on last-mile broadband infrastructure projects in rural areas lacking reliable internet access.

An additional million will be invested in Ohio’s Appalachian Community Innovation Campuses Program. This program aims to construct multi-purpose facilities in eligible counties within the Appalachian region, increasing access to education, community health services, and workforce development opportunities.

This new investment comes after Ohio received nearly 4 million in June to bring high-speed internet to 183,000 households in the state. It reflects the ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure every Ohioan has access to reliable internet connectivity.
