Blair County Commissioners Approve 0,000 for Broadband Internet Project

Blair County commissioners in Pennsylvania have unanimously agreed to allocate 0,000 towards a new broadband internet access improvement project. The funding is subject to the project receiving federal funding through the state. The proposed project, put forward by Crowsnest Broadband LLC of Woodbury and supported by Alleghenies Broadband Inc., aims to introduce a mix of fiber optic internet and wireless connections to improve internet access in the Williamsburg area and in Juniata Township.

The commissioners’ decision to pledge 0,000 comes after Crowsnest pledged the same amount towards the project. This will fulfill the required match for the project’s funding. If the project is pursued, it is expected to benefit 593 locations, including 423 that currently have no internet service. It will also improve internet speeds at an additional 136 locations and address the internet service gaps in 34 underserved locations.

This is the second time in two weeks that Blair County commissioners have committed funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) towards broadband access improvements. On July 27, they authorized 3,606 for a broadband internet expansion project proposed by ABI Inc. and Crowsnest, which aims to improve or introduce internet access for 1,700 users in multiple locations throughout Blair County.

In addition to the Crowsnest project, the commissioners have also agreed to provide a letter of support for a broadband internet access improvement project developed by Verizon. Although Verizon did not request financial assistance from the county, it is seeking a million grant from the Broadband Infrastructure Program for a larger .5 million project that will support internet access improvements in the northern areas of the county, including Tyrone and Snyder Township.

Blair County commissioners are committed to addressing the demand for improved internet access in various regions, responding to growth and concerns raised by residents. They are also supportive of other projects proposed by Comcast Cable Communications LLC in the Tyrone and Williamsburg areas, as well as in northwestern Blair County.
