Best and Worst States for Broadband Internet Access in 2023

A recent study conducted by BroadbandNow Research has released rankings for the best and worst states in terms of broadband internet access in 2023. The study assessed each state and the District of Columbia based on various factors such as access to wired or fixed wireless broadband, access to low-priced broadband, and median download and upload speeds.

According to the findings, Nevada is now the only state where less than 20% of the population has access to a broadband plan priced at or less per month, which marks a significant improvement from 25 states in the previous year.

Delaware emerged as the top state for broadband internet access, with 46.2% of its population having access to affordable broadband and a median download speed of 96.1 Mbps. On the other hand, Alaska ranked at the bottom of the list with only 20% of its population having access to low-priced broadband and a median download speed of 58.5 Mbps.

In the Tri-State area, Illinois secured the 14th spot, boasting wired or fixed wireless broadband access for 95.7% of its population, along with access to low-priced broadband for 31.4% of its residents. Furthermore, Illinois exhibited a median download speed of 85.3 Mbps, surpassing the median speed nationwide.

Indiana earned the 23rd position in the rankings, despite having a faster download speed of 85.7 Mbps and 31.4% of its population having access to low-priced broadband. However, only 92.8% of Indiana’s residents have access to wired or fixed wireless broadband.

Kentucky, on the other hand, ranked 36th overall, with only 25% of its population having access to low-priced broadband. In an effort to improve the situation, Governor Andy Beshear, Senator Mitch McConnell, and other lawmakers collaborated to secure over billion in funding for broadband access in the state, marking the largest public investment in high-speed internet in Kentucky’s history.
