Alabama Governor Announces .8 Billion Initiative to Expand Internet Access

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has revealed plans to allocate more than 0 million in federal funding and over .4 billion from the U.S. Department of Commerce Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program (BEAD) to enhance high-speed internet access in the state. The initiative, known as “Be Linked Alabama,” aims to bridge the digital divide by providing broadband connectivity to all residents.

Governor Ivey emphasized the importance of ensuring that every county in Alabama has access to high-speed internet. The project will support “last-mile” connections to homes and businesses, as well as the creation of a robust middle-mile infrastructure. Grant applications for the Capital Projects Fund, totaling 2 million, will be open from August 14 to the end of October, with a focus on establishing crucial connections.

The initiative also includes the Anchor Institution/Middle Mile (AIMM) program, which will extend its reach to around 500 anchor facilities, including educational institutions, hospitals, and government entities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) is facilitating this groundbreaking initiative, with collaboration from various stakeholders such as government officials, ISPs, research institutions, and community leaders.

To provide updates and resources related to the broadband expansion initiative, the state has launched a dedicated website at broadband.alabama.gov. This website serves as a hub for information on the Be Linked Alabama initiative and will keep residents informed of progress and resources available.

Governor Ivey’s announcement underscores a long-term commitment to bridging the digital divide in Alabama and ensuring that all residents have access to reliable high-speed internet. The substantial investment from federal funding and the BEAD program will help bring enhanced connectivity and internet access to communities throughout the state.
