Airtel Africa Faces .3 Million Fine for Quality of Service Issues in Chad

Airtel Africa, a prominent telecommunications and mobile money services provider operating in 14 African countries, has been fined .3 million by the Chadian government for not meeting quality of service requirements. The fine came after an audit conducted by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Post (ARCEPT) found a noticeable deterioration in Airtel’s services in Chad.

In an effort to improve its network services across Africa, Airtel Africa announced the rollout of its 5G network in three countries starting with Nigeria, followed by Tanzania and Zambia. The implementation of 5G in Nigeria has been successful in four cities, including Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, and Abuja. Airtel Nigeria’s CEO, Carl Cruz, expressed optimism about the potential of 5G, stating that it opens up new opportunities compared to the existing 4G network.

The audit conducted for Airtel Chad was a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the regulatory body and telecommunications operators in 2021. As part of the agreement, Airtel committed to making significant investments to enhance development in Chad over a three-year period. The MoU was established following subscriber complaints received by ARCEPT, which led to the formation of a committee to monitor the impact of investments on service quality.

In 2022, ARCEPT found that the service quality of both Airtel Chad and rival operator Moov Africa Chad fell below expected standards. This highlights the importance of meeting quality of service requirements set by regulatory bodies to ensure a satisfactory experience for customers.

Airtel Africa’s presence in East Africa and Central and West Africa positions the company as a key player in the African telecommunications market. As it continues to expand and invest in infrastructure, Airtel aims to provide reliable and high-quality services to its customers throughout the continent.
