United States Urges North Korea to Halt Satellite Launches

The South Korean military has revealed a sunken part of North Korea’s ill-fated Chollima-1 rocket, which crashed into the Yellow Sea on May 31. The rocket was carrying a military reconnaissance satellite. The United States has called on North Korea to refrain from launching additional satellites, as it believes that these space launch vehicles violate multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.

A spokesperson from the US State Department emphasized that any North Korean launch using ballistic missile technology, including space launch vehicles, is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The spokesperson stated that space launch vehicles and ballistic missiles share interchangeable technologies, including those found in intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The State Department spokesperson urged Pyongyang to instead engage in serious diplomacy. The spokesperson expressed concern over the North’s unsuccessful attempts to put a claimed satellite into orbit, with the latest reported failure occurring on the day of the statement. North Korea has announced its intention to make a third attempt in October.

The United States is calling on North Korea to cease engaging in further unlawful activity. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of Pyongyang pursuing serious and sustained diplomacy to resolve tensions. However, they asked not to be identified.

The United States’ statement comes amidst ongoing tensions between North Korea and the international community over its missile and nuclear programs. These launches have raised concerns about the North’s ballistic missile capabilities and its potential threat to regional and international security.
