Ukraine’s Minister for Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, is leading an effort to develop new technologies to counter the threat posed by Russia. Fedorov believes that technology can help save lives and offset Russia’s advantage in manpower. One of his projects is the creation of an “Army of Robots” to carry out tasks that would put Ukrainian soldiers in harm’s way. These robots include automated machine guns with AI aiming systems and robots that can lay mines and detect explosives left by Russian forces. The goal is to develop robots that can absorb the enemy’s firepower, making the army more flexible and reducing the risk to soldiers’ lives.

Fedorov also envisions fleets of self-driving vehicles that can transport weapons, deliver ammunition, and evacuate wounded soldiers from the front lines. Successful tests have already been conducted on next-generation air-defense sensors that combine secretive technologies, including AI, to identify Russian missiles and drones. These sensors use technology designed in Ukraine, different from the radar systems donated by NATO countries.

Fedorov is part of a younger generation of Ukrainian leaders involved in the country’s war effort. Many of the projects he spearheads are made possible by celebrity fundraisers, including Mark Hamill, Oleksandr Usyk, and Sir Richard Branson. United 24, a fundraising platform established by President Volodymyr Zelensky, has raised millions of pounds to support medical supplies, the rebuilding of Ukraine, and the development of military technologies for the armed forces.

Through these initiatives, Ukraine hopes to develop innovative technologies that can be used not only by their own forces but also by other countries in the future. The focus is on creating a more technologically advanced military to counter the ongoing threat from Russia.
