Trooper Stops Speeding Vehicle, Discovers Wanted Robbery Suspect

Yesterday morning, a trooper from the Indiana State Police Pendleton District stopped a passenger vehicle for a speeding infraction and discovered that the driver was wanted out of Tennessee for Robbery.

On August 20th, 2023, around 9:00 am, Master Trooper Jeff Culley was patrolling Interstate 70 near the 116 mile marker (Knightstown exit). While checking the speed of vehicles, Trooper Culley observed a black Toyota Camry exceeding the posted speed limit. He then attempted a traffic stop, but the driver reportedly fled from law enforcement.

During the attempt to evade arrest, the driver took the Knightstown exit at an excessive speed, leading to a loss of control of the vehicle. The driver eventually came to a stop in the grassy area of the off-ramp and exited the vehicle to continue fleeing on foot.

With the assistance of deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, a perimeter was established, and the driver, later identified as Jeremy S. Godwin, age 43, of Carbon, Indiana, was quickly apprehended.

Further investigation revealed that Godwin had an active warrant from Tennessee for a charge of Robbery. He was arrested for resisting law enforcement and will be extradited back to Tennessee to face the robbery charge. Jeremy S. Godwin is currently being held at the Henry County Jail.

The Indiana State Police had support from other law enforcement agencies, including the Henry County Sheriff’s Department and the Knightstown Police Department during this investigation.

Please note that all criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
