TooMuchWifi Expands Internet Connectivity to Underserved Communities in Western Cape

Cape Town-based township internet service provider, TooMuchWifi, has announced its expansion into three additional communities in the Western Cape province. The company aims to bring affordable and reliable internet connectivity to underserved areas and bridge the digital divide that hinders the participation of many communities in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The expansion includes the provision of internet access to Mbekweni, a settlement between Wellington and Paarl, where there is a growing demand for connectivity. TooMuchWifi is also extending its reach to the communities of Atlantis on the West Coast and Delft near Blue Downs, where it already has an existing presence.

South Africa, known as the most unequal country in the world by the World Bank, faces challenges in providing essential services such as internet access to impoverished and underserved areas. This lack of connectivity and digital literacy skills worsens education inequality and impacts employability.

Through its wireless internet service, TooMuchWifi aims to empower communities by giving them the tools and resources to participate in the digital economy. However, millions of people in low-income communities across the country still lack affordable and reliable internet access.

Tauriq Brown, CEO of TooMuchWifi, emphasizes their duty to assist those living in Mbekweni, a settlement home to seasonal workers who are currently trapped in unemployment due to limited access to resources that could improve their lives and livelihoods. The expansion aims to provide these communities with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the economy and improve their circumstances.

TooMuchWifi currently serves 40 low-income areas in the Western Cape, with a customer base of 400,000. It operates as a wireless internet service provider dedicated to providing affordable and reliable internet to underprivileged individuals and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in underserved communities.

The company’s expansion plans have been supported by investment from social impact investors such as the MIC (Mineworkers Investment Company) and Bamboo Capital, both sharing TooMuchWifi’s vision of making internet access available to all.

TooMuchWifi has achieved significant growth, expanding at a rate of 300% year-on-year since 2016. The company intends to continue expanding across the country to reach more people, creating job opportunities and promoting inclusivity.

In line with their mission, TooMuchWifi’s research highlights that residents in Mbekweni and similar settlements were paying up to R600 per month for Wi-Fi access. By utilizing the ISP’s service, these expenses can be significantly reduced, making educational and economic opportunities more accessible.
