The aftermath of a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian airbase

New satellite imagery has revealed the destruction caused by a Ukrainian drone attack on the Soltsy-2 airbase in Russia. The images show the remains of a Tu-22M Backfire bomber that was destroyed in the attack. The images also indicate that Russia has evacuated all other Backfire bombers that were parked at the airbase. Prior images from Aug. 10 show a large contingent of Backfires at the base, but they are no longer present in the recent satellite imagery. This evacuation is seen as a remarkable feat considering the complexities of military aircraft. While the bombers were absent, a Russian helicopter was spotted after the attack, as well as peculiar activities on a central taxiway.

There are conflicting reports of another Ukrainian drone attack on the Shaykovka airfield in Kaluga Oblast, which is home to the 52nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment. The damage caused by this attack remains uncertain. Reports suggest that the drone used in this attack was a civilian copter retrofitted with explosives. The Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Directorate has claimed responsibility for both attacks, stating that they were carried out by individuals inside Russia.

The evidence supports the assessment that some UAV attacks against Russian military targets are originating from within Russian territory. The UK Defense Ministry has stated that copter-style drones are unlikely to have the range to launch attacks on Soltsy-2 from outside Russia.

These drone attacks highlight the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles in modern warfare and the ability of non-state actors to carry out such attacks. The situation further escalates tensions between Ukraine and Russia and raises questions about the security of military installations.
