The Perseid Meteor Shower Captured a Satellite “Train” on Video

The Perseid meteor shower, known as the best meteor shower of the year, delighted skygazers earlier this month. However, an unexpected sight stole the show. The Subaru Telescope in Mauna Kea, Hawaii captured a video of a satellite “train” moving through the sky, which has now gone viral.

The video, posted on the telescope’s official YouTube channel, shows a group of 15 dots appearing on the horizon. These dots were identified as SpaceX’s Starlink satellites. The clip, shot on August 11, was part of a special live streaming event during the peak days of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The description of the video mentions that the satellites appeared “fairly bright and impressive”. This phenomenon has caught the attention of astronomy enthusiasts worldwide.

The Perseid meteor shower is visible from July through September, with its peak strength typically occurring on August 12 or 13. It gets its name from the location in the Perseus constellation from where the meteors seem to originate.

The Subaru Telescope, located in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, is a large optical infrared telescope with an 8.2-meter primary mirror. It is known for its wide field of view compared to other large telescopes.

This unexpected sighting of the Starlink satellite train has added to the excitement of the Perseid meteor shower, providing astronomers and skywatchers with a unique spectacle in the night sky.
